My Guide to Surviving COVID-10 Quarantine Alone

Never in a million years did I expect an entire country to go on lockdown. While the United States isn’t under order to quarantine just yet, it feels like it’s a matter of time before it’s officially announced. I’ve been self-quarantining since Tuesday, March 17th at 1pm and I’ve decided that’s important for those of us who are going it alone, to have a survival guide.


Step 1: Create A Daily Schedule


I’m fortunate that I still have my job and that I can do my job remotely. Monday-Friday that keeps me occupied until 4pm. Those days, I’ve been following my typical weekday routine to make it more normal. Here’s roughly what that looks like:


6:30am: Wake Up

6:40am: Take Dog for 1mi - 1.5mi walk.

7:30am: Do quick full-body workout (I use the Workout for Women app.)

7:45am: Shower

8:00am: Relax and prepare breakfast

8:30am: Sit down to work

10:30am: Take a quick walking break

10:40am: Back to work

12:00pm: Eat Lunch while working

2:30pm: Take quick walking break

2:40pm: Back to work

4:00pm: Wrap up the workday

4:05pm: Take Kiwi for another 1mi walk

4:35pm: Workout

5:15pm: Cook Dinner

6:00pm: Eat Dinner

6:30pm: Relax

7:00pm: Take Kiwi for another long walk 1-2mi

8:00pm: Settle in for Netflix/reading or whatever relaxing activity I choose.

10:00pm: Go to bed


As you can see, my work week schedule keeps me fairly busy. Of course, I’m not SUPER rigid on this, but I mostly stick to it. Add in a few phone calls or change up the order on the walks/relaxing time, and that’s my week in a nutshell.


Now, weekends are another story. I kind of allow that to be my freebie time during normal circumstances, but today I discovered it doesn’t feel freeing like it usually does. Instead, it feels limiting because while I’m getting to relax, I don’t have any real choice as to where I can go or what I can do.


And that’s frustrating.


So I now plan on creating a schedule for the weekends to help keep my sanity.


Step 2: Find Hobbies To Keep You Busy


I’ve always loved making things with my hands. Whether it’s painting, making jewelry, coloring, taking photographs, cooking, or any of the numerous other hobbies I have. I just like creating something and that comes from having a crafty mom.


I find it very soothing. Here’s a list of activities you can use to fill your time and distract your mind:


  • Photography

  • Painting

  • Cooking

  • Drawing

  • Coloring

  • Sudoku

  • Video Games

  • Blogging

  • Collaging

  • Indoor Gardening

  • Macrame

  • Knitting

  • Wood Carving

  • Thread Art

  • Reading

  • Magic Tricks

  • Investing

  • Yoga

  • Home Beer Brewing

  • Writing


And the list goes on. There are all sorts of things you can do AT HOME to stay safe but also keep you entertained. It doesn’t even have to be for the sake of being productive. It can be for the sake of having fun and enjoying life!


Step 3: Learn Something New


I’m a nerd, I love learning. Always have and always will. In fact, I’m known for spouting out random “fun facts” to my friends, coworkers, and family. It’s one of my my quirks. Ever since we were advised to self-quarantine, I decided to make use of some of my newfound downtime.


One of the things I’m focused on learning is investing, specifically in the stock market. I started reading "A Beginner's Guide to the Stock Market" by Matthew R. Kratter. I'm about halfway through and I feel like I've learned quite a bit already. Watch out Warren Buffet, I'm coming for you! ;)


I’m also reading some psych books to further expand my knowledge of how the brain works and why I am the way that I am. On top of that, I've got more free time to catch up on my photography. Luckily, I work for KelbyOne and get free training, but they're also providing free webcasts and other free training while all of this is going on. Check it out!


Here are a few skills you can learn while you’re safe at home:


  • New Language

  • Finances/Investing

  • How to Organize and Declutter Your Home

  • Photography

  • An Instrument

  • Yoga

  • Cooking

  • Coding


Step 4: Stay in Communication with Other People


Loneliness will drive you crazy. If you don’t believe me, just read up on it and see how social isolation can cause some real damage.


Now, while I do have a dog who keeps me company, she doesn’t talk. Okay, that’s not true, she backtalks me ALL THE TIME. But… she doesn’t speak my language and I can’t have the types of conversations I'm used to having with my friends and colleagues at work.


So, in order to keep a connection with the outside world, I rely on a few different methods of communication. I text, call people, chat online, FaceTime, post on social, participate in Google Meetups/Hangouts or whatever they’re called, go on virtual dates. Now I haven't started writing letters, but I'm not completely throwing that idea out the window...


Step 5: Do Things That Make You Happy


I’m a firm believer that you should enjoy the life you’re living. Of course, there are going to come times when you have to do things you don’t like, but overall, you should strive to find ways to make it better.


Like to go to the bar? Host a Google Meetup where you all drink with your friends and share stories!


Like to go to the park? Take your dog or yourself on a walk! Just make sure to keep your distance.


Like to go to the movies? Host a Netflix watch party with your friends and chat about the exciting parts!


Like to host dinner parties? Have your friends all sit down to dinner and FaceTime each other with your favorite dishes!


Like to go to the gym? Create a gym at home and get your sweat on or download an app that’ll teach you various bodyweight exercises!


Like to go fishing? Drop a line in your fish tank and catch those cuties! (Okay, okay that one’s a joke. Leave your poor fish alone!)


But do you get where I’m going with this? We all need to find modified ways to do the activities we love doing while keeping each other safe because, at the end of the day, this isn’t just about you or even me. This is about all of us coming together so that we can move past this difficult time and come out of it stronger, more united, wiser, and with a hell of a lot more compassion than we’ve been showing each other.
